PURPOSE and SCOPE:

The Shop Student is responsible for assisting the Experimental Mechanics through interpreting engineering drawings to assist in the fabrication of prototype machinery and the updating of prototype part locations and status through the Engineering Build Shop.

This is a 4 month-term starting May 2025.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work in conjunction with Engineering Shop Supervisor, Design Engineers, and Experimental Mechanics preparing machines and prototypes for Field & Lab Testing
  • Complete Equipment Inspection Sheets
  • Update Parts Locations & Status on Engineering Part Tracking System
  • Update Build Schedules in Engineering Bays for better build visibility
  • Work with Design Engineers to interpret print vs. part discrepancies
  • Assist with the logistics of moving equipment to and from the build shop
  • Fabricate/modify parts/test stands when required
  • Maintain general housekeeping and 5S duties
  • Log Issues with Builds for Tracking Purposes
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • Enrolled in (or graduated from) University Engineering or College Engineering Technology program.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent communication skills; oral and written
  • Proficient in Windows and Office Software
  • Ability to use Digital camera equipment, email and video equipment to create reports
  • Good interpersonal relations
  • Good planning and administration abilities
  • Ability to work in both team situations and independently
  • Intuitive, self motivated and hard working with lots of patience
  • Strong Mechanical abilities-experience with machinery repairs an asset
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and electrical circuits – troubleshooting and repair experience an
  • asset
  • Welding/Oxy/Acetylene, MIG experience is an asset
  • A farm background an asset
